Hi,

Its been a year since I have bought my first Mk2 Miata! The intention of the purchase was to use the car as not only a bit of fun to drive but also as my first project car. I'm looking to develop it as much as I can but first before I spend any money on cosmetics and performance i have to fix the rust. My rear wheel arches are rusty and the underside of the car is more worryingly rusty. I wanted to know what people have to say in terms of fixing a mx5 mk2s rust, what the dos and dont are for enhancing it, any advice, tips and more!!!

Thankyou,

MiataMan

Hi there. Apologies for the delay. Welcome to our corner of the web. Yes, Mazda and rust. All have it and some are basket cases. Arches and sills are common. Chassis legs less so, but expensive to fix. You need to get into it to find out if the exercise is worth it,  Don't even bother with enhncements unless you are on top of the rust. It will not go away on it's own, but it is curable.

Hello and welcome to mx5life.com, MiataMan  :)

I am assuming you are in the USA due to you reference to "Miata"  - but I could be wrong of course!

As Roddy said, above, check very carefully for hidden corrosion deeper than the visible rust - these cars rust from the inside out, especially the rear wing, inner wing and sill areas. Also drop the engine undertray and carefully check the front chassis rails. Some cars rot very badly here, but not all, thankfully.

Thank you for accepting Roddy! Nooo, as much as I wish I was in the USA for my Miatas sake, lots more parts to be bought there... but I’m from the UK! The car is due it’s service this month so I’ll make sure to get all of what you’ve said checked. Thank you for your advice! Fingers crossed it’s a manageable problem so I can work on the car in more exciting ways!

I’ve had mine repaired fairly straightforwardly having got to it early which was in the rear arch- I’ve heard as the above lovely people mentioned that it’s often worse inside. I had ridiculous figures from some classic car establishments and opted instead for some one who knew someone... he sent me photos to keep me updated. If you try to patch it up, it will come back. If the guys you get to look don’t know Mx5’s, they really need to look under the undertray. Other hot spots seem to be jacking points, by the drain holes on the sills and in the boot either the lid or under the battery. Good luck and welcome to MX5life :)

Thankyou all for welcoming me in! Look forward to hearing/seeing all of your Miatas. I’ve got the MOT booked for next week and a specialist to look at the cad next week too! Fingers crossed 🤞🤞
