..... but it has only done 1500 miles since October 2019.

I must decide to use it or trade it for something else.

Anyone got an immaculate 2004/5 "Arctic" 1.8 they would like to part exchange for my 2019 MX5 2.0 GT ?

Am I sensing that you are slightly disappointed with the ND, Nick? You sound rather as if you'd be happier with another NB 'Arctic' 馃

Modern cars do absolutely nothing for me, the Toyota GT86, Escort ST, Polo GTI, Mazda ND are all good performers, pleasant to drive and reliable but are all so much the SAME. I would be hard pressed to remember which one I was actually driving. The ND was particularly useless during lockdowns as we would have starved if we had used it for essential shopping, the boot is so small.

Richard with the immaculate red Capri said he would like a new MX5 and I offered to swap mine for any of his three Capris. He said words to the effect that he would never swap his children.

I think that is a very fair comment, Nick 馃檪

Late model MX5s are supposedly in demand, due to the supply chain issues with new cars, so may be worth contacting the likes of WeBuyAnyCar to see what they would offer to buy the car from you, or indeed your supplying dealer

My local Mazda Dealer has already offered prices verbally, subject to viewing, but he wants me to buy a new car from him :

Showroom condition 拢23000 (which mine is)
Average condition 拢22100
Below average cond 拢21150

I cannot think of one modern car that I really appeals to me and certainly none in his showroom.

How does that compare with what you paid for the car 2 years ago?

When push comes to shove, I am sure that the dealer is not going to miss out on the opportunity to make some money, buying your car and reselling at a profit, whether you buy a new car from them or not.

October 2019 - ND on the road with extras, plus 拢585 first year Registration/Road Fund, less "buy before discount" and "PCP deposit allowance" (PCP since paid off) came to 拢23355
Problem still remains if I turn the car in for cash what can I buy that will keep my interest for at least 2 or 3 years and ideally longer ?

We Buy Any Cars has just offered 拢24325 subject to inspection !

I have just consulted Parker's Guide and they are saying that my 2015 ND is now worth 拢10,795 if the mileage was 70,000. My ND has actually done only 43,000 miles, so that puts it at around 拢11,795 - 拢795 more than I paid for it over two years ago!!

2 years depreciation free motoring, maybe even a small profit can't be bad. The way I would look at it is that the tide will turn with used car prices soon enough, and if you keep the MX5 then you will have a car that is costing you money, while still not being used, so better to sell and bank the money, and then you can consider your options for your next car at your leisure. This is on the assumption that you have a car that you use most of the time, and so not replacing the MX5 immediately would not be a problem.

As to what car you buy next, I guess it is a question of setting out your list of priorities and seeing what car ticks the boxes. Maybe you should buy a cheap special edition Mark 2 / 2.5 which you know needs work doing, due to rust etc, and take it somewhere like the MX5 Restorer to get the work done properly. You will then have a MX5 that will last you for a good few years, at an all in cost of sub 拢10,000. While you will never get back what you paid for it, a rust free special edition Mark 2 / 2.5 will always be worth a reasonable amount, so your depreciation going forward will be capped, and should certainly be less than the depreciation on a newish car.

Actually yes I am, Mark. My problem is that I only have one car these days, so I will need to trade the ND in when I find a suitable replacement.

Ha! You're correct, Mark - WeBuyAnyCar.com have just offered me 拢12,665 !!!

They will obviously knock that down on inspection - stone chips, etc - but still way more than I paid in June 2019 (拢11,000)

You could always agree a deal on the replacement, arrange to collect it in a few days, then take your MX5 to WeBuyAnyCar the day before you collect the new one - worst case scenario you might need to hire a car for 24 hours, but if the WeBuyAnyCar price justifies it, then you should still be up on the deal overall, and that way you can focus on buying the best car for you, rather than the best "cost to change" figure, on the basis that sometimes you find a good car, well priced, ticking all the boxes, but the part ex price offered is laughably low, and so you end up buying an inferior car, because the cost to change is better.

Just put my RF details into WeBuyAnyCar just out of interest, and been offered 拢22,400 for it, which is a little disappointing given the value of Nick鈥檚 car.

I know mine is older being a 19 plate v 69 plate, and is a Sport Nav, whereas Nick鈥榮 is the GT, and mine has 11,000 on the clock, but given the premium for the RF over the soft-top when new, I would expect the values to be fairly similar, and yet mine is almost 拢2000 adrift of the offer for Nick鈥檚.

On a more positive note, I can sell mine for a little more than I paid for it at the end of 2019, so depreciation free motoring for a year and 8 months, and about 7000 miles, cannot be bad.

Given the warranty expires next March, then if values hold up, I may look to swap it for a sporty tin top in the Spring

I also tried Motorway late last night. They have given an estimated buy price of 拢25238 ! Any views on Motorway v. WeBuyAnyCar ?

What a crazy world where money in cars appreciates and money in the bank depreciates !

Last year Webuyanycar offered me 拢2500 for the Arctic over the internet which I thought was a bit high and wondered if it was a ploy to get me to go to their local branch and then once they've got me there offer as lower price . I have read that the price of second-hand cars has shot up over the last year. The worrying thing is , if they did give me 拢2500 for it then what would they be asking for it on the sales pitch. I paid 拢5500 for it from the main dealer 10 years ago.

I have not used Motorway, but I have used WeBuyAnyCar.com back in 2016 when I sold my fairly high mileage, 6陆 year-old NC2.

They really went to town on paintwork damage, knocking 拢100s off the original quoted price. The staff member went around the car, inspecting every inch and noting every tiny blemish, including the mass of paint erosion on the nose of the car, which, as we know, is common. Yet, he didn't drive it!! When I questioned that he said: "as long as it gets itself on the transporter we don't worry about that. It will go straight to auction"

I recently found out that 'We buy any car" and 'Cinch' are part of the massive BCA group!....they are strangling dealers and think this is driving prices!

Here's the video!
