Hi there, not been on here for a while after getting very frustrated about downloading images which I couldn’t get to grips with (no computer skills whatsoever sadly).

im not sure if things are easier these days as the site has had a refresh since I last visited. I will find out shortly as I’m going to try and post an image of my car which Mazda UK awarded show n shine MX5 photo of the year. I got a goody bag but the most important bit is that my little car (Dino) got the recognition he deserves.

I‘m learning more about this special little car as the months go by but the story so far is that it’s only covered 32k miles and is totally original as it left the factory. I believe it’s a very early UK spec car with the SNC engine, glossy roof latches and single hole slam panel. It was serviced recently by my local specialist who said it was one of the best early cars he’d ever seen an immediately offered me cash (lots) to buy it. I refused but was pleased my hunch of a good car was correct and my snap decision to buy it was the right thing to do although I do own another nice mk1.

Anyway, it’s crunch time so let’s see if I can download the prize winning photo….

Nice images Michael and yes, so much easier to upload with a much bigger file size permitted.

I have to confess that the reference to a "SNC" engine has me baffled, as far as I was aware the 1.6 engines were all given the designation of B6ZE(RS) with power output of either 114bhp from 1994-1998 but 114bhp from 1990-1993.

The 1.8 engines had a designation of BP-ZE, from 1994-1995 the power output was 128bhp and from 1996-1997 it was up to 133bhp, I believe the rationale behind the detuned 1.6 B6ZE(RS) from 1994-1998 was to bolster the sales of the more powerful 1.8 engine which had a block approx 25mm (1") longer to accomodate the larger bore to make up the extra cubic capacity, apparently the 1.6 block just didn't have enough meat between the bores to take the extra bore size.

Hello again,

I’m a bit of a novice but understand that only early cars had snc and this can be identified by 4 holes on the crank pulley rather than the usual 8. They have a bit of a reputation for pulley wobble which is very difficult to fix and has wrecked many snc cars but fingers crossed mine appears to be fine. I’m also lead to believe (I think) that they use a lighter crank and are slightly quicker off the mark. Certainly mine is quicker up to 40mph than my later 1.8 at which point the newer car finds its legs and is faster after this point.

I agree with your conclusion about the later 1.6 detuned engine and the embarrassment of the 1.6 being as quick as the more expensive 1.8. Interestingly the tuning boys prefer the 1.6 for tuning, turbos and the like for reasons that baffle me.

What is nice to see is that these little cars seem to be much appreciated than they were when I bought my pair a couple of years ago. Lots and lots of magazine articles and YouTube videos including the MX5 Restorer which I’m hooked on.
