I have been a 5er for only a few weeks now 4 in fact, Having grown tired of modern euro boxes that only required a modicum of effort do drive I found myself bored.
In 2010 I ditched my then Corsa for a 1968 Morris Minor (Jethro) and got a lot of the fun back that driving should produce, I had always wanted a classic car but my dream cars were always going to be out of reach to me (Austin Healey 3000, or the Frog eye Sprite). In april of 2011 I saw what would become my first open top 2 seater, a 1972 Mark IV Triumph Spitfire (Abby), and I was smitten with it. (I will ad at this point that I had been looking at several Mk1 5s but they were all pretty knackered.)
Everytime I got behind the wheel I ended up with face ach from the smiling :) It drove fantastic, its loud :frantic:and sure gets attention everywhere I go in her. But I was using her as a daily drive, to work, shopping and various other duties. With an impending 1600 mile round trip looming I felt Abby just wouldn't be upto the job and as a 40 year old she wasn't really suited to daily use. So I had need of something that would be well able to cope with daily abuse and long trips, yet still maintain that "FUN" factor. This is very important to me now to enjoy my driving without being crippled at the end of it.
I had aready driven my friend George's Mk2, but felt thay were still a little new for me, I preferred the styling of the Mk1 with its front nose and pop up lights and so the search for ride commenced and a the end of January this year I aquired my little red 5. I was not dissapointed, the driving experience, although very modern to what I was used still able to deliver what I needed and then some, I can throw the 5 round the twisties and bends with ease and despite being 23 years old can out manouver even the most modern of "sporty" cars leaving them in my rear view mirror. The 5 still gains attention though not as much as the spitty.

My only regret is why the fek did I not get one last year.

I wasn't intending to buy one......

I needed to replace my aging Puma and went in to the dealer to book a test drive in the RX-8. There was a Galaxy Grey Mk3 parked in the showroom and somehow I managed to book a test drive in that instead.

I'm now on my second one. Since then my son has bought his own - a Mk1 V Spec

Liking the photo :)

I'm surprised you sold the Le Mans given they're are probably gaining in value. Any reason why?
A few reasons - one being it was getting old and I wanted a bit more comfort. I was also getting paranoid about it getting hit by another car or lorry..... Getting it repaired would have been a nightmare! :( It was time for someone else to have a turn of owning it!

Our collection started at Easter 2006 when my Wife said that she fancied a mid life crisis sports car....

We went to "look" at a Twilight blue Mk2 but it was a bit neglected and it wasn't in the sort of condition we were looking for.......... then...........my wife spotted the yellow California...:inlove::inlove::inlove::inlove: it was love at first sight..

She went out for a road test and was hooked.... of course I had to try it after that, and then I came back with a grin from ear to ear !!

After a couple weeks of fighting each other for the keys, I decided to buy my own.... I checked through Autotrader for a couple of weeks and I found my Sport.

But it didn't stop there, I then bought the Le-Mans and a Mk1 track car and have a 1/4 share in another !

We've met some great friends since we've owned the 5's and done so much socially with them, holidays, days out, get togethers, fettling days etc..... it's amazing how these cars bring people together :)

We wouldn't change it for the world now.....

Cheers Buccaneer5.....

I can only agree with you there Suzy....
It was after the lorry hit the S2k in Belgium when it was stationary - I could have taken the Le Mans on that trip - it was bad enough the damage to the S2k but it being a bit stronger than the LM I was able to drive it back to the UK even though it was damaged - if it had been the Le Mans it would have been going home on a breakdown truck.....

Bought my first in September 2007, but had been close to 5's since around 2000 when I used to work closely with Mazda Dealerships and also used to be involved in the running of the now defunct Annual Newbury Mazda OC Treasure Hunt, having the free use of 5's on demand I never really got round to owning one until 2007 when I purchased a low mileage RC. Since then I have owned 7 other 5's for varying periods of time, but I still have the RC and the LeMans. My initial purchase was after an arguement with my then partner, I just decided to spend some money on me for a change. Unfortunatley when I bought it home (and we had made up!) she decided she wanted one so we ended up getting her a Euphonic. Needless to say the cars have outlasted the ex!

Like everyone else, I will probably always have a five now as its more about the people and the adventures than the car now.

I have an Audi A4 cabrio and an S Class Merc. Still do. They're capable, but no fun. Soul-less electronic metal boxes.

I wanted a back-to-basics cheap runaround.

All my reading and asking around led me to the MX5. No desire to work "upwards" to a Boxster.

I'm quite social, so I also enjoy the bonus of a community feeling. Never has a friendly wave not been returned.

It's a long time since there's been a post on this forum, it was interesting to read all the past members names that used to post on the site it brought back some memories.
Indeed Bill, sadly some are no longer with us and many seem to have just disappeared into the ether. Would be great to see Life get the buzz that it used to have back again.

2004 I got my first '5 a mk2.5. Now on my third Mk3,it's been in my ownership for 10 years come September.

Edit: yes of course it wasn't 20 years, now corrected. Big fingers, 'phone keypad - not great bedfellows.

I've just looked through the list of posts again and I was surprised to see that I never posted so here's my contribution.

I've had my Arctic for 11yrs now, how time flies.

The reason I bought it was for my retirement, I bought it one year before to give me time to fettle it.
I'd always wanted a two seater convertible but because of the family it wasn't practical and I couldn't afford two cars.

When I started work as an apprentice I used to work on customers sports cars , the garage was situated in the middle of the posh part of town and most of the customers kids had sports cars when they went to university and I only had a push bike so I vowed that one day I would have one.

I bought a Mazda for a few reasons , I would have liked a 1950's MG TD but I didn't fancy adjusting tappets, grease nipples, contact points, carburettors etc. every 1000miles I just wanted something to drive and polish.

Also I didn't want an aggressive looking car I just wanted something more traditional, if you shut one eye and squint a bit it could be an E type, the Mazda is not a threatening car, people let me out at road junctions and they always give me a smile, you don't get that with a Porche or a BMW.
I'm used to everyone having to pass me, youngsters , van drivers etc, so I just let them go, you'll all know what I mean and I really love leaving people behind on roundabouts.

When I first had the car the price of petrol and the road tax wasn't a problem, that came just after I bought it.
I think that just about covers everything.

Hmm....Surprised I haven't contributed on this either!🤔

Got my first MX-5 a Mk1 Harvard in 2006, it was an effort (i.e Nagging!!!) by the wife to get me off two wheels!!...lol...
I looked at a couple of MG's as you do.....🤔
But a small lottery win and selling the bike I had got me on the path to MX-5 Heaven....

I soon ached for something a bit nicer and not long after saw me swap my 2.0 323 Sport and the Harvard for a Mk2.5 1.8 Nevada.
After only 6 weeks I swapped the Nevada (at a profit!) for a Mk2.5 Sport, which in turn got me on Mx-5.com pleading for advice as JCT 600 (Spit)...Sold me a car with a dodgy gearbox!!....🤬

That in turn (once repaired) was swapped for My first Mk3 2.0 PRHT, I then had the 1.8se PRHT, 2.0 Graphite (brand new in 2013), a 20th Anniversary ( downgraded so I could get the daughter in a car) and finally moved to the 1.5 ND in October 2018 and still love it today....Thanks to cheaper tax/insurance and economical mpg...despite the 'thrapings!' 😍
It is also probably the longest I've had in terms of 5 ownership!....
Hope for a few more years yet!
