Half the problem is that the apps are mostly built with the view that the software /updates will be downloaded directly form the market using default file / folder locations. If you download direct from a PC, you'd need to know where those locations are to get stuff into the right place, then there comes the problem of activation of the installer - mostly you'd expect automatic start, but I for one wouldn't expect this to happen if you don't download direct to desired target location.

Unless you have rooted your phone, and know your way round Linux command lines, I wouldn't recommend it.

Doable - absolutely. But you need to know your way round a few Linuxy things, and as I say, you need to have a rooted device.

(A bit like jailbreaking an iPhone)
