I thought I'd started a thread on this chap but can't find it.

He's a motoring journalist with a liking for older cars. His take on the 'green car' is not to buy a new small turboed hatch but to fettle something destined for the scrap yard and keep it going. He has a small fleet of old bangers.

His other interests include 4x4s, electric vehicles and facial hair.

Testing an unbranded jump pack.

Not seen one of these devices before but it looks like a scaled up version of one of those external batteries for mobile 'phones.

Does anyone here have or use one of these type of packs and do they work ? I lug a spare full size battery and jump leads around when necessary.
I was bought a set that plugs into the "cigarette lighter" sockets in late December.
Not had the opportunity to use it as yet.

I sure as hell ain't flattening my battery to find if works or not though :nah:
I would be terrified of incinerating the wiring loom feeding starting power through the lighter socket. I used to use the lighter sockets for charging the battery before I fitted CeTek connectors to make it easy to connect a charger/conditioner . Unfortunately I keep one car in a remote lock-up with no power so occasionally I have to deal with a flat battery there.
Check for bodies in the boot ....

The Invacar was made in a factory in Benfleet which also produced the Greeves scramble bikes. The disabled owner of the company raced around in a tuned up old-fashioned open three wheeled invalid carriage.

Thank you, Chris. It was all so familiar.
Of course I agree with what Kev. said.
My FIAT X1/9 had body-piercing rust at less than 12 months old.
I had a similar experience back in the 1970s with Alfa Suds. Initially I bought a cheap second hand basic Alfa Sud as a stop gap car, loved it so much that I bought a new Alfa Sud Sprint Veloce !
Fantastic to drive but rusted despite being Ziebarted from new. Also had repeated head gasket problems on No 4 cylinder which filled with coolant if stopped on induction stroke.

Thanks Chris ! Not sure I agree with his comments about the crashy uncomfortable ride as even my wife likes driving the Puma. Perhaps the demonstrator has had the suspension poly-bushed or tweaked.

Rather like the MX5, the Puma gained an unfair "hairdresser's car" reputation despite it's excellent handling and performance from the 123bhp Yamaha tuned engine. We are currently on our second Puma as they are loved and driven by all the family members.
