I thought I'd started a thread on this chap but can't find it.

He's a motoring journalist with a liking for older cars. His take on the 'green car' is not to buy a new small turboed hatch but to fettle something destined for the scrap yard and keep it going. He has a small fleet of old bangers.

His other interests include 4x4s, electric vehicles and facial hair.

He's all of my schoolteachers rolled into one, Jono - except for our PE teacher who was a sadistic git
Must admit I've always been a bit cynical about stuff like this, Nick but it seems to work ok on the petrol engines.

As an aside - if they signed him up for Top Gear, I'd watch it :)

I must admit that I used to love towing our 'van, We were like gypos during the school holidays, in summer we'd disappear somewhere for the whole 6 weeks, a week or so in each different place, the kids and the dog loved it. A 4x4 helps though, makes towing a breeze

Get off the beaten track in rural France and you'll still see these things along with the old Citroen H vans, Jono. This fella's great, I love his videos - must visit his channel and look through them all

He needs to sort that garage, gawd only knows how he works in that mess. I also couldn't see a fire extinguisher anywhere - I do hope he has one given the amount of petrol, heat and sparks he's mucking about with. Apart from all that, in some kind of morbid way I find this project quite interesting (the Hagerty thing gets a bit tiresome though). I grew up in an age when these things were everywhere on our roads so it's all a wee bit of nostalgia even if they are / were evil things.

What does he actually do for a living? It must cost him a fortune buying all this tat

:giggle: He really is rubbish at mechanicing, not got a bloody clue and how the hell he works in that mess of a garage of his is beyond me!

I'm not convinced he had those brake shoes in the right orientaion either (at 9.30), most I've come across over the years aren't put on like that, one of the them would be in the opposing direction - i.e the right hand side one of his is I suspect upside down as it's normal to have one leading and one trailing brake shoe. I may be wrong but .... :coffee:

Ok, ok...I have to admit that from the late 60s to about the mid 70s, I was a long-haired, 19" loon-pants-wearing, tie-dye boy. Not exactly a 'hippie' because I went to college and had a 'proper' and responsible job, but like many of us at this "certain" age I was a young man of the times!

However, like all good things, it didn't last.

Like my old school mate exclaimed last year when we met up for the first time in 47 years..."Blimey, Kev - what happened??"

Good of him... :bored:
We had our moments eh Kev? Wish I still had the car.

The Toyota Starlet wasn't actually that bad, but like with most cars the early editions were the best - mostly because they were RWD :coffee:

it had a great chassis and saw action in a lot of rallies where they were / are always great to watch. There are a few out on the present club rally scene, they put in an appearance at last November's Neil Howard Stages at Oulton Park (and I daresay I'd have seen them again on Sat had I braved the cold weather and got to the AGBO stages at Weston Park) and they always go well. It's all down to the superb chassis though, I've seen many incarnations of it fitted with front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, four wheel drive and loads of different engines - the Suzuki Hayabusa motor has been seen in a few but a lot also use the standard Toyota motor - they made a turbo version which was a fiesty little thing.

I'll be honest here - I've always fancied one to play with ..... Hmmm!

Enjoy ....
