Hello All,

I thought I'd say hello. I've recently bought a 2008 Hard top MK 3 Roadster (43,000 miles with full history). I spent over 20 years in the motor trade and never considered buying one...what a mistake! Now I work in an office and can keep the interior of my cars nice and clean I decided no more "bangers", I treated myself to what I consider to be a nice car. I know the NC is not to everyone's taste but bear with me and I'll fill you in on my reasons...

I bought an MR-2 which had to be returned to the dealer & taught/renewed some lessons:

Never take anyone's word for anything, check the car over yourself...can't believe I fell for that one, 10 years of out the trade made me more trusting than I had been.

Removable hard tops are a pain ... if you live on a road that's one lane wide and people are waiting to get past.

Removable hard tops are heavy enough to damage my better 1/2's back.

Removable hard tops don't maneuver up cellar stairs easily.

SMT gearboxes are just weird (MR-2 "manual" with no clutch) Sequential Manual Transmission (£650 for a replacement clutch).

If your car is loud in factory spec, it's still loud, it doesn't get any quieter when you drive 100 miles... even with the radio turned up.

Some cars just feel too stiff.

Leather seats look nice and cleans easily, but in hot weather they make your back sweat.

I hate filling cars up with fuel every time I want a drive out.

When people comment on your car being for hairdressers just smile like you're driving your car round a roundabout.

Up your budget and buy a nicer car to start with (if you can).

With the above in mind I bought a 1.8, hard top with cloth trim. It's standard in every way and I love driving it.

It's not too; Loud, Stiff, Expensive to run, Painfull to put the hard top on.

I like the security of the hard top, and if I'm being honest a lot of vanity shows here...It just looks cool going up/down :).

It's been 15 or so years since I just went out for a drive for fun (Nissan S14), but the MX5 restored that long lost urge.. I love going for a drive now, I just get in a go, no fuss or hastle, mostly I take a turn or two through the Derbyshire dales or for a treat down to Wales. It's just so much fun without risking my life or licence. I get good MPG but better smiles per gallon.

Anyway rambling intro over, here's a piccy.

Thanks for the welcome, I do have a quick question I need a little advice on. I live close to Manchester for reference and I'm looking for someone good to check out the cars suspension/steering geometry.

The wheel is slightly off center ( and I do mean slightly, say 2-3 degrees) but it's distracting. It pulls ever so slightly to one side when on a non-cambered road and I get a weird reaction when hitting a bump with the front wheels so I'd like to get it taken care of. Do you have any recommendations? As you might guess I don't mind driving some distance for the right service :)

Hello again, rheon...

The default solution to any misalignment or suspension issues is this company:

They have a terrific reputation and their knowledge of the MX-5 is second to none

Welcome to 'Life' rheon......

Ignore the 'sarky' comments they are just jealous people!

I'm just 'tother side o't Pennines, and, with you 100% on the folding hardtop, and even more on the selection of the 1.8 which is the better car to drive!

I even like the 'stormy blue' colour....

Sadly the pre 09 cars will always need the fourwheel alignment done, they were built that way. The 09 on are much better due to improved parts, the front wishbones being one of numerous small improvements.

Enjoy....And keep us updated with your adventures!

I took my 2010 NC from Yorkshire to WIM for tyres and an alignment. The handling was great but even the Great WIM left the steering wheel a couple of degrees off straight.

My 2013 NC has just had a bottom arm replaced and, as expected, the steering wheel is just a tadge off straight. Nowhere near as bad as Ford left the one on the Fiesta after a track rod end change. It should never happen but it does seem a common event.

PS wellcome to the forum.

Hello and welcome, do a search for Paul Roddison (Sheffield, is that near?) for alignment and general MX-5 mechanical things.

Hi Rheon,

the importance of getting the geo set up correctly cannot be emphasised enough, far to many MX5 owners accept it 'out of the box' and because it generally handles better than anything they've friven before they accept that it's as good as it gets. Certainly not the case, my first NC had a tendency to rear steer when lifting off the throttle, probably not helped as all my NCs have had been the 2.0 with limited slip diff.

After putting it in for a geo check and re-alignment as was needed, the car was absolutely transformed even in fairly standard trim, it had only had the Eibach lowering springs fitted, so an honest opinion is to make getting the geo done a priority.

The "weird" reaction you get when hittting a bump could be simply the geo being out of limits and inducing an odd feeling, the NCs are quite sensitive to alignment being out or just a thought, it could be a broken drop link, again these are prone to wearing out, generally you hear a clunk though however if a previous owner has ignored this, it could be broken thus meaning the Anti Roll Bar is not doing anything at all, that would certainly make the front end feel odd especially when you hit a bump.

I would suggest that you have whoever is doing the geometry check/alignment do a thorough check of all bushes and linkages to ensure there is nothing overly worn or indeed broken.

Good luck and a warm welcome to Life.
