My NC would only travel in reverse, no forward movement. Left it a few hours, then all was well. Lost confidence in using the car,

Any suggestions welcome.

As badman said, Eric, it would be good practice to introduce yourself, join up and then we can have a proper chat with you

At least it wasn't an expensive repair Eric. Now get out and enjoy the Five as it deserves to be.
It wasn't a repair though Rodders was it? How can anyone tell if a gearbox will stick into reverse again or not - what did they do to "check it" and come up with the diagnosis that it will be ok? Something caused it to stick in the first place, and without a either crystal ball or taking the 'box out to have it checked over properly I fail to see how they came up with their conclusion. Eric needs to first of all change the oil in there as I suggested, I never usually give advice twice but l'd love to know what they did to check it over :)

Personally I'd go with the explanation offered by Jono in the video he posted. The guy in the video, although clearly as loose as a 22mm af spanner on a 10mm af nut head seemed to understand the issue in hand.

Keep a watchful eye on it though.

I trust there is no warranty on the car that you could at the very least have got them to have checked out when it was stuck in reverse?

Shame if not. I must admit it would niggle away with me until I'd found root cause and addressed it in full, can't imagine anything worse than being on holiday/break hundreds or thousands of miles from home and the fault manifesting itself again, hence my recent repairs to the GM, after inspection of the components involved chances are it would have gone another 12-18 months before complete failure of anything but one needs absolute 100% confidence in your car, or I know I do.
