UK MX-5s have a 17 digit chassis number starting with: 'JMZNxxxxxxxxxxxxx'

Japanese MX5s have 10 digit numbers starting with:
  • 'NA6C-xxxxxx' Mk1 1.6
  • 'NA8C-xxxxxx' Mk1 1.8
  • 'NB6C-xxxxxx' Mk2 1.6
  • 'NB8C-xxxxxx' Mk2 1.8
It's then broken down into the following sections:

NA1, NB1 or NC1
These denote the "car line", it's an internal factory reference.

8: Body type
8 = 2 Door convertible.

B, P, C, 6, 8 or F: Engine type
B, C, or 6 = 1600cc
P or 8 = 1800cc
F = 2000cc

2, 5,or 6: Transmission type
2 = 5 speed manual
5 = 4 speed auto
6 = 6 speed manual

00 - Production plant
00 = Hiroshima

The last 6 digits is the serial number of your MX-5
